Design and Operation

Mixing Vessel – The ribbon blender consists of a U-shaped horizontal trough containing a double helical ribbon agitator rotating within. The clearance between the external periphery of the ribbon and the internal wall of the mixing vessel is generally in the range of 3 mm. The clearance may be higher depending on the properties of the materials being blended.

Mixer Drive System - The ribbon blender is powered by a drive system comprising of a motor, gearbox, couplings and/or chain-chain wheel.

Mixer SealThe blender shaft is provided with an appropriate sealing arrangement in the area where it exits the mixing vessel.

Material Charging and DischargingMaterial is loaded in the blender through the charging nozzles provided on the top lid. Discharge of material is generally through a centrally located bottom  discharge valve. The blender may be provided with more than one valve, depending on the operational requirement.

Mixer AssemblyThe blender assembly comprising of the mixing vessel and the drive system are mounted on a supporting structure, base frame. The height of the base frame is decided based on the required charging height and the discharge height required for the blender operation.

Mixing Principle

The rotation of the ribbon flights near the vessel wall cause the material to move towards the centre of the mixing vessel. The rotation of the inner flights directs the material in the opposite direction towards the vessel walls. The counter current, axial flow of materials, combined with the radial flow due to the action of inner and outer ribbon flights results in homogenous blending of the process material.

Mixing Mechanism : Convection Blending

Homogeneity of Mix:  90 to 95%

Capacity: Ribbon blenders can be manufactured in a wide range of  capacities. Blenders upto 10 m3 are common. The blender capacities can be as high to 50 m3.

Optional Features:

The ribbon blender may be provided with an external jacket for heating or cooling the contents of the mixing vessel.

The ribbon blender can be provided with liquid spray arrangement for coating the powder materials.

Advantages

  • Easy loading and unloading of material.
  • Easy to operate and maintain.
  • Homogenous blending with low power consumption.

Disadvantages

  • Material discharge is limited to 95 – 97 %. This can lead to contamination issues during product change over.

Industry Applications

Ribbon blender are commonly used for blending large volumes of free flowing, dry, solids materials in the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and chemical industries. The blender is capable of handling small quantities of liquids, used for coating or wetting of powders. The following are some of the applications of ribbon blender:
