A barrier fluid is a media used for flushing of the seal faces in a double mechanical seal.
- As the name suggests it acts as a barrier between the process media within the mixing vessel and the flushing fluid.
- It is maintained at a higher pressure than the process fluid to ensure that only the barrier fluid film remains across the seal faces all the time.
- The barrier fluid takes away the heat generated due to friction between the mechanical seal faces.
- The barrier fluid is stored in a pressure pot and is circulated through the mechanical seal with appropriate piping connections.
